I'm currently on a shoot in Kenya, Africa, and I ran into a Japanese man sporting some gear I didn't recognize. While his English was very limited, I was able to confirm that he works for Canon and is doing in-field testing with the new Canon 200-400mm with built-in teleconverter. He also was testing the new Canon 600mm.
What I also noticed was a Canon camera body that I hadn't seen before. You can see it in the photos I took...I see the "Q" button located by the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the top left. The battery grip seems to have a joystick. I also noticed a "Rate" button...hrm, any ideas?
Is this the new 5D Mark III, or maybe the 7D Mark II? This info I was not able to determine.
I'll tell you this, that Canon 200-400mm is on my shopping list as soon as it's available. He told me he thought it would be officially released on March or April.

ReplyDeleteTo me, that looks like a 5DMkIII or 7D MkII - I would think not the latter but who knows. I really hope it's the next 5D as I've been waiting for it for a year now!!!

ReplyDeletegood find. seems, Pictures 1-3 are 1DX. look on the left side of the Viewer and the second display. 200-400+1DX and possibly 600+5DX - the Design of the "new" Body reminds me of the changes on the 1DX, for example the Button leftside of the Shutterbutton.

ReplyDeleteTheres 2 different bodies in these pictures. The one in the first couple photos is 1D(?) by looking at the button layout. The real question is what 1D is it? Is it the new 1DX?
ReplyDeleteThe second one has a circular selector dial on top and a button layout identical to the 7D. However the battery grip has a quick select dial on it (what you would use to activate focus points in vertical shots), which doesnt exist right now. Pretty cool. If this camera is in fact the 5D MKiii then why on earth would it need a quick select dial on the grip? I dont know.
Looks like this was sent to the boys over at Canon Rumors too. But I still dont think this is the MKiii body.
5d mkiii. Unless the 7d is having its integral flash removed.

ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for the new 600 IS II for six months. My 1Ds Mk III is very long in the tooth. I have a 1D Mk IV that has over 20,000 images. I too am a customer for both the 1DX and the 200-400 but it is getting a bit frustrating that Canon is so slow to deliver its new technology.

ReplyDeleteAlso notice the new button right above the "rate" button. Is this a wireless-transfer dedicated button (both for files and printing)? Additionally, it adopts the on-off switch position of the 7D/60D (bad location if you ask me for one-handed operation), as well as the lock button on the mode wheel as in the 60D (good feature).

ReplyDeleteDue to the pristine condition of the lenses and body on a safari in Africa I'm assuming these images were shot on the same back lot where the Apollo moon landing shots were taken. Okay, just kidding! Hopefully we'll hear the full story by March- or before! I was looking at an article in February 2011's issue of HD Video Pro, page 102, "As you already know, even with the cool firmware upgrades, the Canon EOS 5d Mark II is getting a little long in the tooth." Yea, almost a YEAR ago!

ReplyDeleteIt appears that these are two different cameras. Camera in the first 3 pics has 2 displays on the back and no wheel on the top (next to the hot shoe).

ReplyDeletePhotos 1-3 have a different body to 4-6. You can see that the first 3 have buttons on the left of the hotshoe, but the second 3 have a wheel in the same position. Maybe its the 5D Mk III and the 7D Mk II?

7d has a built-in flash. 5D mkII does not. The camera on the picture does not seem to have a built-in flash.

ReplyDeleteThere appear to be two different camera bodies. The 200-400mm is on a EOS-1D X. The 600mm is on the mystery body. It has the exact same button layout as the current 7D but some of them have different labels. If I had to guess, I'd say that this is a 7D Mk II. Thoughts?

There are two different cameras in these photographies, the first one I think it is a Canon 1DX, the second one is similar to one 7D altough slightly different...

ReplyDelete"Rate" may be no more (or less) than an ability to set the frame rate for continuous shooting. I have the ability to set the rate at either 2 or 7 fps but I'd much rather be able to quickly set it at any integer value between 1 and 7.

ReplyDeleteAbout the new camera: note that it has no flash, instead having a large prism hump. I'd suspect that that is the next 5D. Note the big eyecup: more eye relief?
ReplyDeletePeeking at the raw file, I see there's a button that looks like it might enables and disable a touchscreen in the top of the left row of buttons. Maybe. It does look more like a paintbrush than a finger or stylus, though.
If you look closely, in the images above the first 3 frames show a different camera than the last three frames. The first three show a tall body with no battery grip. the second three, frames 4-6 show the one with the dial on the left side of the camera.

I guess that the aspect seems to be close to 2:1. And you know that a 4K DCI picture has 1,89:1 aspect ratio (4096x2160)...

In my opinion it is the new Canon 5D Mark III that is used withe the 600mm. Their are 2 facts.

ReplyDeletethe images you show clearly contain two different camera models. Only the cam used with the 600mm lens has a grip and the program dial. The camera used with the 200-400mm zoom has the vertical grip integrated (+ display) and no program dial but the 3 known buttons.
When I first glimpsed at one of the images I couldn't believe they'd bring a 5D III without program dial ... and it just looked too "pro".
So the other one must have been a 1D something... I suppose.
good news though, I was able to upgrade my old 5D to the II and I think I can keep myself from buying the II for another couple of months now.

well theres clearly 2 different cameras there as seen in pics 3 and 6, i would say the camera in no 6 is certainly a in development camera and may not be a 7dnk2 due to the fact the the 7d has a built in flash however the one in the picture doesnt so thats a 5dmk3 or even possibly a new number? a 3d?

ReplyDeleteThe one with the 200-400mm is the 1D X. Though the one with the 600mm has more in commom with the 7D than with the 5D Mark II, it's already pretty certain that the 5D Mark III's new battery grip comes with a joystick and a it's very unlikely that the 7D Mark II doesn't get a flash.

I was asking myself what this japanese photographer is shooting with this great lens and body...
So...right click...save as...photoshop...and then, in the screen of the last image, the head of a bird that looks like a casuarius.
(they only live in australia and new guinea).
Am I wrong ?

It certainly isn't a 7D - I know since I have one - and certainly not a 5D2, which means it could be the long-overdue 5D3! Its finally showing up! How exciting!
