By Stephen Oachs
I'm currently on a shoot in Kenya, Africa, and I ran into a Japanese man sporting some gear I didn't recognize. While his English was very limited, I was able to confirm that he works for Canon and is doing in-field testing with the new Canon 200-400mm with built-in teleconverter. He also was testing the new Canon 600mm.
What I also noticed was a Canon camera body that I hadn't seen before.
You can see it in the photos I took...I see the "Q" button located by
the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the
top left. The battery grip seems to have a joystick. I also noticed a "Rate" button...hrm, any ideas?
Is this the new 5D Mark III, or maybe the 7D Mark II? This info I was not able to determine.
I'll tell you this, that Canon 200-400mm is on my shopping list as soon
as it's available. He told me he thought it would be officially released
on March or April.

no built in pop-up flash ... probably not a 7D II?
ReplyDeleteTo me, that looks like a 5DMkIII or 7D MkII - I would think not the latter but who knows. I really hope it's the next 5D as I've been waiting for it for a year now!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's "5D2s"
ReplyDeletegood find. seems, Pictures 1-3 are 1DX. look on the left side of the Viewer and the second display. 200-400+1DX and possibly 600+5DX - the Design of the "new" Body reminds me of the changes on the 1DX, for example the Button leftside of the Shutterbutton.
ReplyDeleteIf that is a 5D Mark III, then the on off switch has moved!
ReplyDeleteI am really hoping that is the 5D III. Release it before July and I will be a happy camper. :)
ReplyDeleteI am wondering, if that happened. Thanks!
DeletePhotographer Australia
mmmm 1.4x adapter built into the 200-400? neat idea.
ReplyDeleteCanon 1 DX
ReplyDeleteNICE!!
ReplyDeleteThe camera being used with the 200-400 is a 1 series, probably the 1D-X coming out in March/April
ReplyDeleteTheres 2 different bodies in these pictures. The one in the first couple photos is 1D(?) by looking at the button layout. The real question is what 1D is it? Is it the new 1DX?
ReplyDeleteThe second one has a circular selector dial on top and a button layout identical to the 7D. However the battery grip has a quick select dial on it (what you would use to activate focus points in vertical shots), which doesnt exist right now. Pretty cool. If this camera is in fact the 5D MKiii then why on earth would it need a quick select dial on the grip? I dont know.
Looks like this was sent to the boys over at Canon Rumors too. But I still dont think this is the MKiii body.
5d mkiii. Unless the 7d is having its integral flash removed.
ReplyDeleteNot his english,
ReplyDeletebut your japanese ist very limited.
Stupid, stupid...
It's pretty clear from the top of the body that it's a 1D prototype.
ReplyDeleteThe body looks to be the 1D X to me.
ReplyDeleteNice catch!! To bad you could get a look from the front...
ReplyDeleteYou Sir, are a true detective.. job well done.
ReplyDeleteSure looks like a 5D III to me... screen ratio looks to be the same as the 1DX
Go back and ask!!!! NOW ;)
ReplyDeleteMust be a 5-series. No flash! Mayb 5Dx, since X is the new ruler.
ReplyDeleteWhat did it say on the front of the camera? :)
ReplyDeleteHow fast does the FPS sound on that smaller body?
ReplyDeleteinteresting spotting! thanks
ReplyDeleteno pop-up flash....my bet is that's a 3rd gen 5D or 5D replacement. Great find! Looks like he had two bodies, or swapped on a BG when switching to the 600 lens, becase the BG isn't in the shots w/ the 200-400.
ReplyDelete1dx?
ReplyDeleteDrool Drool
ReplyDeleteplease clean up your camera infos bevor posting your canon-commercial!!!
ReplyDeleteI plum wore out my sigma 120-300. this new canon is bonerific.
ReplyDeletePictures have 2 different bodies? Was I the only one to notice this?
ReplyDeleteClassic case of needing the 200-400 to shoot the 200-400...
ReplyDeleteooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooollllollll
ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for the new 600 IS II for six months. My 1Ds Mk III is very long in the tooth. I have a 1D Mk IV that has over 20,000 images. I too am a customer for both the 1DX and the 200-400 but it is getting a bit frustrating that Canon is so slow to deliver its new technology.
ReplyDeleteI'd say its a 5d mark III. Doesn't look like there's a pop up flash which I'm assuming (always a bad thing to do) that the 7d mark II. Will retain.
ReplyDeletefirst pics 1Dx... after that probably 7D mark ?
ReplyDeleteKonnichiwa
ReplyDeleteI'm the Japanese photographer.
the camera will not be announced until April 2012. i cannot say which camera body i was testing. With due respect please remove my photos you took of me so that i can maintain my job.
arigato
that's a 7D bro
ReplyDeleteIt will be on my wish list, not my shopping list because the price will probably be very high!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure it isn't a 1 DX?
ReplyDeleteAlso notice the new button right above the "rate" button. Is this a wireless-transfer dedicated button (both for files and printing)? Additionally, it adopts the on-off switch position of the 7D/60D (bad location if you ask me for one-handed operation), as well as the lock button on the mode wheel as in the 60D (good feature).
ReplyDeleteHi there
ReplyDeletevery interesting - probably 5D3
On pic 3 you see the 1DX in then test field as well...He had all the good stuff with him
Thanks for sharing
BR Soren
No pop up flash .... More likely a 5D mkIII
ReplyDeleteFinally
ReplyDeleteOn the 200-400 lense there is a switch 1/1.6 and is currently (on the first three photos) on 1.6
ReplyDeleteI guess it's a crop sensor...
In the first 3 pics it is with the 1DX, the otherones 5D mk3 i think...bye!
ReplyDeleteInteresting, makes me feel now that I need to hold off buying a 5D if this is the new one that is coming out. This lens looks very intriguing! I wish Canon would just announce when the new 5D is going to be released.
ReplyDeleteDue to the pristine condition of the lenses and body on a safari in Africa I'm assuming these images were shot on the same back lot where the Apollo moon landing shots were taken. Okay, just kidding! Hopefully we'll hear the full story by March- or before! I was looking at an article in February 2011's issue of HD Video Pro, page 102, "As you already know, even with the cool firmware upgrades, the Canon EOS 5d Mark II is getting a little long in the tooth." Yea, almost a YEAR ago!
ReplyDeleteIs the camera being used with the 200-400 a 1DX? There appears to be two cameras here.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like, if anything, this could possibly be the 5d Mark III, rather than the 7d Mark II as it doesn't have a pop up flash. I wish this would just come out already!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere do I sign up for THAT job? "Hey take all this new camera gear and go to Africa on safari and see what type of shots you can get!".
ReplyDeleteSign me up!
Have you seen the flurry of comments this post has caused at www.canonrumors.com? I'm sure many people would love to ask you some questions, for example about the exif data from your pics, and anything else this mystery photographer told you.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the series of 6 shots, there are two different camera bodies there - I'd say we're looking at both the 7D and 5DII successors.
ReplyDeleteIt appears that these are two different cameras. Camera in the first 3 pics has 2 displays on the back and no wheel on the top (next to the hot shoe).
ReplyDeleteOwesome! You should ask the japanese photographer for more informations!
ReplyDeleteFrame rate?
ReplyDeletePhotos 1-3 have a different body to 4-6. You can see that the first 3 have buttons on the left of the hotshoe, but the second 3 have a wheel in the same position. Maybe its the 5D Mk III and the 7D Mk II?
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletei see two different body, a 5D and 7D?
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome.
ReplyDeleteI am going to take a closer look at my 5dii when I get home.
I hope it is a 5diii, then the prices will go down for the ii and I can buy a new one!
7d has a built-in flash. 5D mkII does not. The camera on the picture does not seem to have a built-in flash.
ReplyDeleteNo pop up flash...that would rule out 7D Mk II IMHO.
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing finding. Your post crossed over the net! But nobody commented here!
ReplyDeleteOn pictures 1 to 3 it seems to be the new EOS-1DX. On the rest there's definitely a new camera, either a 5D Mark III, 7D Mark II, or ... a 6D?
Thanks a lot for sharing!
We all hope that Canon CONSIDER some of the FEATURES & IMPROVEMENTS that have been requested since so long ago by so many customers.
Just in case some Canon Manager take a look at this and cares about Suggestions and Feedback from long term Canon users, here it is the article including a List of Improvements that can be implemented in upcoming DSLRs:

Best regards.
Judging like the lack of built-in flash, I'd guess it's the 5DIII?
ReplyDeleteThis post really made big news today! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThere appear to be two different camera bodies. The 200-400mm is on a EOS-1D X. The 600mm is on the mystery body. It has the exact same button layout as the current 7D but some of them have different labels. If I had to guess, I'd say that this is a 7D Mk II. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing Stephen! I have my fingers crossed that it's the 5D MKIII.
ReplyDeleteFIRST PIC OF THE UNKNOWN CAMERA THANKS STEPHEN
ReplyDeletefirst
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Kenya
ReplyDeleteVery interesting, thank you :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a 7Dx. I want one!!
ReplyDeleteNo built-in flash, so that must be the next 5D MKIII, 5D-X, or whatever stupid name Canon marketing like these days.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that what we see is a replacement for the "old" 5D MkII
ReplyDeleteI can only assume it's a full frame camera (and thus possibly a 5d3). Why would you field test a new lens on a crop camera and miss 38% of the image? Quite exciting.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a new 7D.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't have a flash - so it's probably not a 7D mkII
ReplyDeletegood job
ReplyDeleteda bin ich ja einmal gespannt, mit welcher Überraschung canon dann im Frühjahr herauskommt. Eine 5D Mark III wär natürlich schon interessant, wenn das Preisgefüge stimmt
ReplyDeleteThe first 3 photos is 1D X.
ReplyDeleteVlad Zotov / sobos_ru
There are two different cameras in these photographies, the first one I think it is a Canon 1DX, the second one is similar to one 7D altough slightly different...
ReplyDeleteThere's no pop up flash visible, it looks smooth on the case above the mirror box. That means full frame sensor for sure.
ReplyDeleteif you didnt notice then he is using 2 completely different cameras. one has a program wheel on the left side, whlist the other has the buttons familiar to the 1D user.
ReplyDeleteReally cool! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt must be a 5D3, since there is no pop-up mirror.
I am going to guess it is the new 5D. No pop up flash like the 7Ds have..
ReplyDelete"Rate" may be no more (or less) than an ability to set the frame rate for continuous shooting. I have the ability to set the rate at either 2 or 7 fps but I'd much rather be able to quickly set it at any integer value between 1 and 7.
ReplyDeleteOr does Canon have that ability, made available via a direct exterior control?
Thanks for the news.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be the 5dIII : there is no pop up flash.
Fake much, look at picture 3 and you can see two screens on the camera and in picture 4 and 6 they have magicly disepeared...
ReplyDeleteI want my Nikon D4
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to buy a cannon and an awesome lens!Vonda Barnett
ReplyDeleteAbout the new camera: note that it has no flash, instead having a large prism hump. I'd suspect that that is the next 5D. Note the big eyecup: more eye relief?
ReplyDeletePeeking at the raw file, I see there's a button that looks like it might enables and disable a touchscreen in the top of the left row of buttons. Maybe. It does look more like a paintbrush than a finger or stylus, though.
If you look closely, in the images above the first 3 frames show a different camera than the last three frames. The first three show a tall body with no battery grip. the second three, frames 4-6 show the one with the dial on the left side of the camera.
ReplyDeleteAfter further checking the first three images are indeed the Canon 1Dx...
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can see, it looks like it has no auto modes... (Only Tv, Av, M, etc) I've never owned a 5D or a 7D (I have a 60D) - do one of these have the same set of modes on the dial?
ReplyDeleteLooks like a 1D body and controls 1DX is my bet.
ReplyDeleteOOPs I see I looked only at the detail in picture 3 which is a 1D body, the other body is probably like you suspect 5D or 7D mark 2.
ReplyDeleteBy design, this is clearly a 7D successor.
ReplyDeleteLook at the size of that lens ! You could beat a burglar with that lens! Awsome
ReplyDeleteI am guessing more likely to be a 5D3 than a 7D2. Cause I don't the cut lines for the pop up flash on this camera. It's likely any 7D successor will have the pop up flash.
ReplyDeleteso you found out the lenses and he worked for canon but couldn't find out what camera?
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing finding. Your post crossed over the net! But nobody commented here!
ReplyDeleteOn pictures 1 to 3 it seems to be the new EOS-1DX. On the rest there's definitely a new camera, either a 5D Mark III, 7D Mark II, or ... a 6D?

(Google will give the exact URL)
Best regards.
5D mk3. If it was the new 7D, it would have a built-in flash. And this one doesn't seem to have one.
ReplyDeletetwo cameras, First 3 shots Eos 1Dx, last three 5d Mark III. I mean, what better way to test the quality of a lens, if not on FF camera.
ReplyDeleteDisplays images, surely you have more ...
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this to your blog. This is an unprecedented heads up for people interested in the 5D mark Next.
ReplyDeletemost likely the camera is a 5d mk iii. the 7d has a built in flash and this camera does not.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pictures.
ReplyDeleteAlthough on some of them it seems to be the new 1DX
Maybe the new 1D-X?
ReplyDeleteSorry, I didn't think about the grip...
ReplyDeleteLooks like a 1Dx for the first few shots and you are right, maybe a new 7D, since the on/off switch is by the dial like the 7D.
ReplyDeleteIs that a direct print button I see before me?
ReplyDeletethere are 2 different cameras on your photos..
ReplyDeleteI hope it's the new 5D Mk III! :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your pictures, Stephen!
ReplyDeleteDid you notice the shape of the display? Should be a matter of the perspective or is wider than a "standard" 3:2 display?
I guess that the aspect seems to be close to 2:1. And you know that a 4K DCI picture has 1,89:1 aspect ratio (4096x2160)...

Two different cameras as far as I can see. The camera with the 200-400 on it has no mode dial but rather a mode button.
ReplyDeletebut that's not the same body on every 6 images. at pictures 1-3 there is the wheel on the upper left side missing..
ReplyDeleteHello Stephen.
ReplyDeleteI guess there are two different bodies in use. The body on picture 3 (with the 200-400) shows two LCDs, next to the left thumb of the photographer. On pic 6 (with the 600mm) I can see only one LCD.

Hallo,
ReplyDeletethanks für publishing the cr2-File and at first thx for publishing this news overall :-)
These pictures are point of interesst now in many foto-communities around the world. You have make something like a little earthquake with it. :-)
May i ask you a question:
Is ist allowed from your side,
to copy a crop from your raw File for technical diskussion in a (german) fotocommunity ?
Crop means here a crop from the new Camera in Picture 6/6 ?!
Thx for any answer from me
Eric, Germany
Bonsoir et merci pour le partage de photos
ReplyDeletemerci bonne continuation!
In my opinion it is the new Canon 5D Mark III that is used withe the 600mm. Their are 2 facts.
ReplyDelete- The "Mode Dial" looks like the Mode Dial of the 5D Mark II.
- This camera did not got a flash
Greatings Sven (Germany)
Doesn't look like there's a pop-up lens-- More likely a 5D mk III.
ReplyDeleteexciting stuff
ReplyDeleteHi Stephen,
ReplyDeletethe images you show clearly contain two different camera models. Only the cam used with the 600mm lens has a grip and the program dial. The camera used with the 200-400mm zoom has the vertical grip integrated (+ display) and no program dial but the 3 known buttons.
When I first glimpsed at one of the images I couldn't believe they'd bring a 5D III without program dial ... and it just looked too "pro".
So the other one must have been a 1D something... I suppose.
good news though, I was able to upgrade my old 5D to the II and I think I can keep myself from buying the II for another couple of months now.
thx.
Andy
nice
ReplyDeleteis it 1Dx?
ReplyDeleteI think this is a Canon 1D Mark IV & 200-400mm, and a 7D & 600mm
ReplyDeletePerhaps it's the 1Dx?
ReplyDeleteWell this looks interesting. I especially like the widescreen display. That'll be great for filming. And the display showing four digits capacity (1999 images) fits the large capacity storage cards. I'm betting on the 5D mk III but we'll see...
ReplyDeleteSeems it's new 7D! 5D have other body construction
ReplyDeleteLovely! It's a dream come true to have this kind
ReplyDeleteof camera.
well theres clearly 2 different cameras there as seen in pics 3 and 6, i would say the camera in no 6 is certainly a in development camera and may not be a 7dnk2 due to the fact the the 7d has a built in flash however the one in the picture doesnt so thats a 5dmk3 or even possibly a new number? a 3d?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a wider screen as well.
ReplyDeleteHmm I own a 7D., the first three photos appear to be from the 1D line., the last three body looks much like the 7D layout, with out the pop up flash. Looking forward for the replacement of the 5D.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting... thanks!
ReplyDeleteThere are 2 different camera so it's hard to tell . Replacement of 7d or 5d mark ii or something els.
ReplyDeleteThe one with the 200-400mm is the 1D X. Though the one with the 600mm has more in commom with the 7D than with the 5D Mark II, it's already pretty certain that the 5D Mark III's new battery grip comes with a joystick and a it's very unlikely that the 7D Mark II doesn't get a flash.
ReplyDeleteSo, I go with 5D mark III ;)
wow I think you are first with legit photos
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't noticed yet, there are two different cameras on those photos.
ReplyDelete5d3
ReplyDeleteGood stuff! Love that big, wide display on the new camera. The 200-400 is outrageous.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI have a doubt about the origin of these pictures :
I was asking myself what this japanese photographer is shooting with this great lens and body...
So...right click...save as...photoshop...and then, in the screen of the last image, the head of a bird that looks like a casuarius.
(they only live in australia and new guinea).
Am I wrong ?
PS Sorry for my english, it's not my mother language...
Hope your report is not going to cost that poor guy's Job.
ReplyDeleteThe third picture shows us the 1dx i think, because of the small display under the main display.
ReplyDeleteI do not see a pop-up flash on it so I would say it's probably a 5D Mark III over a 7D Mark II.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure which I'm more envious of, shooting wildlife in Kenya or the Canon kit!
ReplyDeleteIt'll be interesting to see the price of the 200-400mm against Nikon's non tele version. Especially since the new Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L MkII has come in at £2,300. *gulp*
It certainly isn't a 7D - I know since I have one - and certainly not a 5D2, which means it could be the long-overdue 5D3! Its finally showing up! How exciting!
ReplyDeleteStoked. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteit looks like EOS-1D X
ReplyDeleteThat's one wicked camera lens. The camera is also great, it can handle lenses big as an elephant tusk.
ReplyDeletedigital cameras
Phwoar, look at the gaping aperture on that!
ReplyDeleteit's the new 7d i guess. or just a new 5 or 6 series with a grip..
ReplyDeletebut i know for sure that it's not the new 5d mkIII, because the buttons are almost the same as the regular 7d..
I guess it's the new 5D Mark III.
ReplyDeleteI think so cause I heard that some people hope for a display you can angle or even turn around (like 60D). And a display which you can angle, tilt or what ever would be more a 7D (or even 70D) style.
Since this one looks pretty fixed to me I guess its the 5D.
What do you think about a new 70D?
Hi,
ReplyDeletejust an observation:
He is shooting with two different cameras. One 1DX, one proberbly 5D.
7
500 posts about the camera bodies and 3 about the most important new Canon lens in decades.
ReplyDeleteWho gives a crap about the bodies, there are so many good cameras around already it doesn't matter. But that lens finally matches (and betters it seems) the Nikon zoom.
Anyone want to but a 400 DO?
Thanks GOD Canon have finally addressed the AF point issue. So sick of having to dick around with 9-point AF when I'm without my EVF.
ReplyDeleteExactly, there's TWO different bodies in these photos. 1DX and a 5D Mark II
ReplyDeleteLast image is the 5DIII. Note the "RATE" button on the left side of the display.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous comment. He's using 2 different bodies. The 1DX and 5D. They look awesome. One thing is for sure, this camera (with lens) takes great and vivid photos.
ReplyDeleteCould be a Zenit photosniper.
ReplyDeleteFantastic your webpage. I love all the details you do on your layouts. :)
ReplyDelete
